Chances are very good that you’ve heard this one before and chances are very low that you love it as much as I do. My vote for the best song of all time is “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)” by Rupert Holmes. How can you go wrong with lyrics like “I’m not much into health food, I am into champagne.” Full disclosure, I in no way promote the attempted infidelity, but fully promote the message that communication is the key ingredient to so many important relationships.
If you are not familiar with the song, the brief summary is a man finds and is intrigued by a personal ad in the newspaper because he is bored with the relationship he is in. He writes back and proposes to meet up at a bar named O’Malley’s and they can plan their escape. Well, as luck would have it, the woman who shows up to meet him IS his “old lady” who clearly was feeling just as bored as he! They were a perfect match all along, but their lack of communication gave birth to this ironic situation. So the song goes…
And we laughed for a moment, and I said, “I never knew”
“That you liked Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain
And the feel of the ocean, and the taste of champagne
If you like making love at midnight, in the dunes of the cape
You’re the love that I’ve looked for, come with me, and escape”
With money, the need for smooth communication between spouses, partners, children and family members is vital for a healthy relationship. This extends to the conversations you have with your financial planner and other trusted professionals. Poor communication won’t necessarily lead you to taking out a personal ad, but it surely won’t help lead you to the destination you are hoping to get to. If this song is stuck in your head for the rest of the weekend…you’re welcome 🙂
Happy Friday!
