I was speaking with a friend the other day about the state of the economy, the stock market and I guess the world. My thought track was along the lines of…”it only matters if someone cares.” As the words were coming out of my mouth I remembered “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss. We read that incredible book with our children months back and the message is timeless.
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” -The Lorax
The US federal deficit swelling, only matters if those countries/institutions lending us money start to care. Our reliance on foreign countries producing the essential goods we need, only matters if someone cares. Ensuring each child in a school district has access to a computer or the internet, only matters if someone cares. Saving the right amount every month to be able to retire someday, only matters if you care.
This list could go on and on and I only hope that as the world puts itself back together we can slightly modify the words of “The Lorax” and promote “unless people like us, care a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
I’ve been sitting on this post for a few months and in light of the tensions being felt across our country, now more than ever seems like a time to either start caring or care more. There is a time to rest and there is a time to work. My June challenge is for us to get to work caring. Whether it be caring for yourself, your garden, your taxes you have yet to file or a cause/movement that you find yourself holding in a new place of importance.
Happy Friday! Stay healthy and please be safe!
